Parks Victoria Cuts Energy Costs with Oracle VM Server Virtualization
Integrated Oracle Infrastructure Delivers over 20 Percent Performance Improvement
Melbourne – 7th April, 2010
News Facts
- Parks Victoria is focused on the conservation of natural and heritage assets and is the custodian of 3.96 million hectares of parks and reserves —17 percent of Victoria’s total land mass. Parks Victoria is required by law to operate in an environmentally sound manner in every part of the organisation.
- By adopting Oracle VM server virtualization, Parks Victoria has replaced old equipment with four high performance servers improving the organisation’s carbon footprint. The time frame for server installation and migration has been reduced from several weeks to just minutes.
- Further software performance improvement have been achieved using the Automatic Storage Management feature of Oracle Database – which automatically manages the placement and mirroring of database files on storage devices. This results in tasks that previously took 1.5 hours to be completed in 25 minutes.
- Parks Victoria’s extensive use of Oracle Spatial for mapping and geospatial analysis of park facilities is an important application area that benefits from the more efficient Oracle integrated environment.
- The small IT team is greatly aided by the productivity benefits of using Oracle Enterprise Manager which automatically manages patching cycles of the Linux operating system, contributing to a reduction in support costs. In all, the integrated Oracle infrastructure – managed through Oracle Enterprise Manager’s central dashboard – has meant a more than 20 percent increase in performance.
Supporting Quotes:
“We were expecting a 20 percent increase in performance, but we have way exceeded our expectations. Having an integrated Oracle infrastructure—from the operating system and enterprise applications to storage management and virtualised servers—really makes a lot of sense,” said Christina Varga, Business Systems Analyst, Parks Victoria.
“Oracle Enterprise Manager is a fantastic solution. It simplifies some very complex tasks and has cut down the time needed to manage the Oracle grid environment,” said Christina Varga.
“By choosing Oracle VM, we could standardise on Oracle and be assured that if we had any problems we need to only turn to one vendor for support across our technology stack.”
